What's an ADU?
An ADU is short for an "Additional Dwelling Unit." This is a secondary, self-contained living space built on the same property as a primary home. Sometimes called an in-law apartment, guest house, backyard cottage, or carriage house. An ADU includes its own kitchen, bathroom, living area, and sleeping space.
There are multiple ways an ADU can be built.
- Attached to your existing home (such as a finished addition or basement apartment)
- Detached from the main house (a standalone cottage or tiny home)
- Built above a garage
- Created by converting existing space, like a garage or barn
Recently in Maine, interest has grown even more because of recent changes to state laws that encourage municipalities to allow more ADUs as a way to increase housing availability. Combined with the state's aging population, growing demand for rental housing, and the desire for multi-generational living, ADUs have become one of the fastest-growing home trends.
